When bonobos mate, the babies and youngsters like to be close to the adults and will sometimes want to join in. The adult female repositioned herself a bit and the adult male came closer to the adult female and they began copulating. She annoyingly swatted away the adult male and kind of protected the young female, but he persisted. The stomping was going on for a solid minute and you could see the adult female getting annoyed. All of this was happening around one of the adult females who was laying down with it's baby. He would corner her and then stomp on her head and back (but don't worry it wasn't too hard). One of the adult males was very excited and playful, he was constantly chasing one of the younger females and being very aggressive. Now with that background i can explain this story! In this exhibit at the Columbus Zoo, there were about 2 young adult males, around 2 adult females with babies and a couple of young females.
Amazingly, the bonobos are mostly bi-sexual, female on female sex is common along with male on male. They will also use sex to solve problems and fights. The bonobos, unlike the common chimpanzees, will have sex multiple times in one day. There are only a few zoos in the US that have these amazing animals because of their love of sex.
